A March Total Lunar Eclipse
Last week, my partner in crime and I were watching Gilmore Girls (yes… we BOTH love it! 😃) after I got off my shift. I knew a total lunar eclipse was going to happen around midnight and figured if we were still awake, I’d go check it out. I’d never seen one before!
Fun fact: A “blood moon” is just another name for a total lunar eclipse. While not extremely rare, only a handful occur each decade. The last blood moon was back in 2022. A blue moon isn’t actually blue—it’s just the second full moon in a single month. A black moon, on the other hand, is the second new moon in a single month.
I don’t usually attempt to photograph the moon. She can be tricky to capture and really requires a hefty (and expensive) zoom lens if you want to see her up close. But as we headed out to watch the eclipse, I thought, Why not?! and grabbed the tripod and digital camera.
At first, there were a lot of clouds, but by the time the full eclipse hit, the sky was completely clear. If I could have controlled the weather, I would have placed clouds surrounding the moon at its peak eclipse to make the photographs more dramatic. But alas! I have yet to figure out how to control the weather. Ha!
As always, I hope you enjoy these photographs—let me know what you think!
